Björnlandet

Björnlandet, deep in the Åsele lappmark of inland Västerbotten, protects one of the most valuable old-growth forests in Norrland — which is to say, one of the last. Almost everything around it has been through the sawmill economy at least twice; Björnlandet's steep hills, boulder fields and cliff-ringed tarns made it poor logging ground, and the forest that survived there is the genuine article: gnarled pines several centuries old, deadwood lying where it fell, and the deep quiet of a forest that has never been a plantation.

Fire, not the axe, is the force that shaped it. The old pines carry healed-over scars — brandljud — from repeated forest fires, and reading them is like reading tree rings at one remove: some trunks record three or four separate burns across the centuries. Fire is what kept the pine forest open and regenerating, and the park now reintroduces it deliberately with controlled burns, one of the places in Sweden where you can see fire managed as the ecological tool it always was.

The park was established in 1991 and roughly doubled in 2017, to about 2,400 hectares. Its scenic centre is the cliff wall rising above the little lake of Lill-Björntjärnen, and its name — "the bear land" — is honest: this is bear country, though like everywhere the bears see you far more often than you see them.

What's worth knowing before you go

This is one of the remoter parks in the system, and that is much of the point. The nearest village is Fredrika on road 92, and the main entrance at Angsjön has a parking area, shelters and the trailheads for a small network of marked loops; the terrain is rougher than the modest distances suggest. There are no services beyond that — fuel, food and beds mean Fredrika or Åsele.

The connoisseur's exercise is the fire scars: find an old pine with its triangular basal scar, then look for the second and third scar lobes healed inside the first. Once you can read them, the whole forest turns into an archive.
